This research details impacts of canopy gaps on soils and biogeochemical cycling in old growth northern hardwood-hemlock ecosystems in the Huron and Porcupine Mountains, upper MI, USA. Soil diversity within a forest stand and soil series was evident due to top-down trophic effects of current canopy gaps, relic gaps in pit and mound sequences, and single-tree influence circles. The impacts of current canopy gaps on microclimate, soil processes and properties were measured with nine gap, edge, and closed forest plots, studied throughout three consecutive years. Solar radiation, soil temperature, and soil moisture contents were significantly greater in gaps compared to the contiguous closed forest plots. Soil available nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) in the 0 to 25 cm soil tended to be significantly greater in forest compared to gap and edge plots, but greater in gap and edges compared to forest plots in the 25 to 50 cm. In-situ N mineralization was significantly greater in gaps compared to closed forests. Potential N mineralization (measured in laboratory at 25°C and 40% water holding capacity) was significantly greater in forest compared to gap plots. Soil microbial biomass was significantly greater in edges compared to the closed forest and gaps. Nitrate in throughfall was significantly less in gaps, but significantly greater in forest floor leachate, and soil leachate at 50 cm. Litter and active soil organic C (coarse particulate organic matter) was significantly less in gaps compared to closed forest plots. Surface C efflux was significantly increased in gaps compared to forest and edge plots. Microbial efficiency (qCO2, microbial respiration/biomass) was significantly decreased in gaps relative to the closed forest. These results contribute to the relatively deficient literature of gap impacts on soils and biogeochemical cycling in old growth northern hardwood-hemlock forests.
